Christians do think about things differently

".... When our hearts are on Christ, Satan has little room to maneuver."

 Quote by Billy Graham

The subtle changes in my life that were taking place were difficult to even notice. There weren't any sudden changes, but there will be some clear refining to get rid of the gunk and the muck that didn't seem to help anyone, especially for the progress of the Kingdom of God.  Some of the refining was a little painful, but now, reflecting back to that life, I realize it was vital to me and especially to God.

Before accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I had been preoccupied with thoughts of the all-important "me." where my thoughts would be focused on how life was impacting me and what I could gain from it.   But, later in my life, I came to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior and there was shifting thoughts from me to Jesus.    So, what affected this change and why?

One is that Scripture says at the moment of conversion the Holy Spirit indwells us as a gift from Christ (see Ephesians 1:13-14).

As Christians, I believe we can acknowledge that our way of thinking does differ from that of the rest of the world. Though difficult to nail down because even within the body of the church there is variety, but it is correct to assume. Can you recall a time following your salvation, when you first began to think differently than from before? Indeed, when a person becomes a Christian and accepts Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior, they are given the mind of Christ.

"...But we have the mind of Christ [to be guided by His thoughts and purposes]"

1 Corinthians 2:16b (Amplified Bible Version)

Thinking in a consistently Christian manner, formed, guided, and constrained by the truth of God's Word and God's Spirit, is referred to as "thinking Christianly." For the glory of God, believers should think and act in accordance with Christian precepts.

Christians, in contrast to the rest of world, prioritize the things of God and the desires to carry out God's will over the desires of the world. Let's use ambition as an illustration.

The will to succeed is the essence of ambition. For those of us who are driven primarily by our own egos, we may only care about our own achievement and fame. Godly ambition is the drive to succeed for the benefit of others.

It comes down to that which is in your heart is what motivates you.  Is that motivation for your Kingdom or for God's Kingdom?

James 3:13–18 enlightens us with valuable information on the driving forces behind worldly human behavior motivation is driven to advancing themselves for their own gain.

James forewarns us against worldly Bitter Jealousy, which can imitate an opportunity by offering an open door for a jealous root to enter, worm its way around the heart, wrap itself around, and finally suffocate it. See Cain's intense jealousy of his brother Abel's better and acceptable sacrifice before a Holy God, in contrast to his own offering, which was unsuitable because it was his own method of approaching a Holy God, as an example from the Bible. Cain's bitter jealousy suffocated his heart and could no longer resist the unthinkable and murdered his own brother.  Bitter jealousy raises a fist against God, resents what He has provided for you, and desires only that which you do not or perhaps are not able to obtain as it belongs or is part of someone else.

And just like its sister trait, Bitter Jealousy, Selfish Ambition causes a person to neglect God's Purpose for their life or working toward the advancement of God's Kingdom in favor of pursuing personal or material achievement and advancement.

Bitter Jealousy and its sister, Selfish Ambition where they exist, James states there will be disorder and every vile practice because they lie against the truth, against thinking of the heavenly things, these thoughts are earthly, unspiritual and demonic.

Christian Thinking Worldly Thinking
Thoughts and actions are produced through godly wisdom from above: Thoughts and actions are produced through the unspiritual, earthly and demonic
First pure then peaceloving Worldly thinking lies against the truth
Impartial and free of hypocrisy Bitter Jealousy and Selfish Ambition
Good deeds and produces good (Spiritual) fruit (love, joy, peace, patience, etc.) Disorder and every evil thing: stealing, murder, adultery, sexual perversions, etc.)
Gentle and reasonable
peaceable producing the fruit of righteousness

To put it another way, a Christian's good deeds should demonstrate that their thoughts are motivated by the godly wisdom that comes from above, and that they are demonstrating this by not living in bitter jealousy, self-centered ambition, or lying.

I know some are thinking that as a Christian I have done some worldly thinking and actions.  Well, there's good news, my Friend, because we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit Who helps us immediately to live an entirely new life by setting us apart for God's Service, teaching us Truth through His Word (the Bible) and He continually works with us throughout our whole life to help us produce Christianly Thinking and behavior and produce good spiritual fruit of the Spirit.  In other words, He helps to free us from Worldly thinking.

Some of you, I'm sure, have entertained or even participated in certain worldly thoughts or deeds but the good news is that the Holy Spirit lives within every believer, providing us with His guidance and helping to protect us from sinning (Galatians 5:16). Confess these thoughts and deeds and know that we are sanctified for God's service and become more Christlike in behavior to honor Him (Hebrews 2:11), and the Holy Spirit operates throughout our lives to produce Christianly thinking and character.

Christianly thinking exercise:

1.Read the Bible.  Read a devotional with Scripture and/or read the entire Bible (Bible Reading plans are a great way to do this)

2. Memorize scripture.  A great start is the Book of Proverbs.

3. Pray!  Set aside time to be alone with the LORD and talk to Him.  Be sure to listen! (Though it's not audible He speaks through our consciousness or through another subtlety.

4. Bible studies.   Just like Cleopas Bible Studies (a shameless plug)  www.cleopasbiblestudy.org

5. Prayer groups.

6. Accountability partner.  What is an accountability partner?  Someone(s) you trust that you can share your personal struggles and helps to keep you on track.

7. "Take every thought captive" (2 Corinthians 10:5). having bad thoughts - you can choose to contemplate them or take them captive and replace toxic thoughts with God's thoughts - (Philippians 4:8)

8. Stay with the Christian community - go to a Bible Believing Church. We're not as secure as loners, because we're sheep, Friends.

9. Learn under mature Christians.

10. Witness and share the Good News.

11. Be a cheerful giver.  Give generously and with a willing heart.

Christianly thinking is part of what and who a Christian is.  It is naturally a part of us as brothers and sisters in Christ.  Not a believer yet?  Let me encourage you to devote yourself to Jesus Christ right now.
